on sand dollars and loss
This has been a summer of loss for us.
My aunt died at the beginning of the season and I found sand dollar on the beach
as I walked on the morning of her services.
An old friend died in the middle of the summer and I found another sand dollar
as I walked the beach a few days later.
On two different occasions I found two other sand dollars
and thought it must have been coincidence
but...
My landlord, who was a sweet, friendly old man, died not long ago
and just a few days ago a very old friend died.
I believe that the universe has a way of responding to the
ripples in its waves.
These are the only sand dollars I've seen on the beaches since I was a little girl.
And, while I appreciate the sentiment and the beauty,
I'm hoping not to see anymore for quite some time.

We all find ways to deal with loss and the sand dollars are a gift to console you for all those deaths.
ReplyDeleteOh, I hear your loss, Kara ... I surely do.
ReplyDeleteThankful, with you, for those serendipitous gifts of the beach.
I am so sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose someone, but to have more than one in a year is more heartbreaking. My Husband has lost three close friends in the last 3 years. There are so many legends concerning the sand dollar. In the christian religion sand dollar represents the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ
ReplyDeleteIt must be a difficult time for you, having to go through so much loss around you. Wish you strength for today and always. Greetings.
ReplyDeletei wish you no more sand dollars in a long long time...
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your season of sorrow.
ReplyDeleteMay God bless and comfort you.
Oh, I'm so sorry for your losses over the past months. I love the connection to the sand dollars, though. Thanks for the beautiful post.
