Look with compassion upon the whole human family;
Take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts;
Break down the walls which separate us;
Unite us in bonds of love;
and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish good purposes
on earth and in all the heavens,
so that all nations and races may serve with peace and love.*

Each morning I walk the beaches across the street from my home.
Often I bring a trash bag with me
and collect pieces of plastic, water bottles, straws (so many darn straws),
things that no one wants anymore.
things that we don't care about any more.
Lately, I have been considering the fact that the tide on my beach gives way to other beaches
where the bodies of little boys wash up on the shore like bits of refuse

So many refugees fleeing for their lives
millions and millions of refugees
little boys that no one saw
mothers and fathers and sisters and grandmothers and uncles and aunts and grandfathers and neighbors and friends and teachers and brothers and preachers and warriors and lovers and haters and writers and musicians and children and children and children and children and children and children and children
that no one sees
can one individual life make a difference?
can one individual life make a difference?
and I bend to pick another straw up off the beach
and I am engulfed in sadness
God's speed little Aylan
may you lie down with heroes and martyrs and saints
and may you wake up all nations
Goodmorning

ABCW team.
Calling by from ABC Wednesday, very poignant.
ReplyDeletewhat a powerful post. Love the post and the importance of it that it brings a situation to life that others can see
ReplyDeletecome see us at http://shopannies.blogspot.com
Your imagery is strong. I don't think I shall look at a straw the same way anymore. Each of us has to unlearn a lot to expand beyond the restrictive walls that institutions teach us to feel safe within.

Dreadful situation. More must be done.

Beautiful tribute. Every once in a while we get a reminder of what it means to be human.
ReplyDeleteThis little soul touches all our hearts. Lets pray those who can take charge of this horrible situation.

I lift up my prayers with you.
ReplyDeletethanks for touching my heart, love you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this, tenderly written. It's a sad thing when through the shouting and crying in spirit at God I hear myself saying 'thank You that you a. allowed this, b. allowed it to be seen globally, that the world might have her heart jump started again. I don't even want to say #refugeeswelcome, I want to say #humanswelcome. Whether from war, persecution, or simply wanting to have/make a better life....from syria, from africa, from mexico....don't we all want that? "He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord.." (prov. 19:17) and "As much as you did for the least of these you did for Me" (matthew 25:40).
ReplyDeleteTake care, and keep your heart warm--He said the way the world would see Him would be through Love.
Blessings (and love!) from Holland,
Jasmine
