friday finds
leaves of grass
“This is what you shall do: Love the earth and the sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, reexamine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.”
Walt Whitman

the tulips that i bought at the market, though pretty,
did not seem to weather very well
I am attributing it to the fact that it is like a root cellar in my house
~
every day I check the frozen dirt next to the doorway
looking for signs of the bulbs i planted in November
nuthin' yet....

Have I said how much I love my man lately
he makes me a better person
and I think I do the same for him
~
start of the day
we live on a rather tiny island connected to the mainland by a two mile causeway
as i am an early riser
most of my days start with the sun rising over the Atlantic
random 5 friday
my town shoot out
I love Walt Whitman. My grandmother read Leaves of Grass to me when I was a little girl.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sunrise. I bought Iris first and they lasted just long enough to get some good shots and then that was it. My bought tulips lasted longer .. thank goodness! I needed some spring! Leaves of Grass -- I need to read again. Happy Friday!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have an inspiring way to start each day! I keep reminding myself that everyday is one day closer to spring. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a view to start the day... I shared that same quote the other day :)
ReplyDeleteGreat Random 5 and have a fun weekend!
That is an amazing quote full of truths! Thank you for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI love that quote by Whitman. So wise and true. Your photo has the kind of serenity that must come of living where you do: just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLovely post, great random 5 ...
ReplyDeleteand what a gorgeous sunrise !

Some of my daffodils and crocus have bloomed. It is so nice to see the spring flowers. I hope yours come soon.
ReplyDeleteLovely. I also live on an island -- slightly bigger than yours, I think, but connected to the mainland only by ferry -- and enjoy sunsets over the Pacific. Is your Whitman quote from Walden?
ReplyDeleteOh, my! I love everything about this! The Walt Whitman is worth learning and keeping in our hearts and minds. The photos ... be still my heart! I enjoy hearing about your island because I love the coast and I enjoy seeing your piece of the coast through your eyes.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Whitman is so wise and that last shot took my breath away.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo!
ReplyDeleteThat first photo is stunning.
ReplyDeleteHopeful images that Spring will come soon! No bulb activity here yet, but I think in the next couple of weeks, we'll have tulips coming up.

Wow. How many can say "most of my days start with the sun rising over the Atlantic"? It's poetic.
ReplyDeleteI wish I was an early morning person. My day seems to go by so fast and yet I rarely see anything worth documenting. I must get out more. I love your photo a lot. I love the lonely bench being spotlighted by the rising sun.
ReplyDeleteWhat a glorious sunrise! That is a fine reward for getting up early (something I don't do often).
ReplyDeleteWish I had that water in my sunrise photos.
ReplyDeleteA breath taking sun rise, this make me miss the island I left behind in the pacific!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful images- and words! I love both photos- both stunning in their own way.
