on sand dollars and loss

This has been a summer of loss for us.

My aunt died at the beginning of the season and I found sand dollar on the beach

as I walked on the morning of her services.

An old friend died in the middle of the summer and I found another sand dollar

as I walked the beach a few days later.

On two different occasions I found two other sand dollars

and thought it must have been coincidence

My landlord, who was a sweet, friendly old man, died not long ago

and just a few days ago a very old friend died.

I believe that the universe has a way of responding to the

ripples in its waves.

These are the only sand dollars I've seen on the beaches since I was a little girl.

And, while I appreciate the sentiment and the beauty,

I'm hoping not to see anymore for quite some time.

won't you come with me and see the beauty of

nature notes
through my lens

  1. We all find ways to deal with loss and the sand dollars are a gift to console you for all those deaths.

  2. Oh, I hear your loss, Kara ... I surely do.

Thankful, with you, for those serendipitous gifts of the beach.

  3. I am so sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose someone, but to have more than one in a year is more heartbreaking. My Husband has lost three close friends in the last 3 years. There are so many legends concerning the sand dollar. In the christian religion sand dollar represents the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ

  4. It must be a difficult time for you, having to go through so much loss around you. Wish you strength for today and always. Greetings.

  5. i wish you no more sand dollars in a long long time...

  6. So sorry for your season of sorrow.
May God bless and comfort you.

  7. Oh, I'm so sorry for your losses over the past months. I love the connection to the sand dollars, though. Thanks for the beautiful post.

  8. Hi, I just found your blog recently and I think it's really beautiful. I'm following your blog but you don't have to follow back. I'm so sorry to hear about the losses you've had lately. I hope there are no more sand dollars for a long time. I'm joining in with your post today too. Thanks for the link up and I look forward to reading more. :)

  9. Sweet, sad post. Beautiful photo. So sorry you have had so many losses!

  10. I appreciated your post today. My Dad died yesterday, a life well lived, at 95.

  11. Oh Kara..I am so sorry for your loss. I hope your memories comfort you. I do think things happen such as you finding the sand dollars... My late friend sends a firefly to my porch every season... just one...on the porch..... I like to think that anyway..Michelle

  12. sorry for your losses sweet friend
