27 November

the blue spruce sits in the park just outside our door

26 November

there was an old bureau in the kitchen

which had three drawers

yesterday when she came in from walking the beach

she had placed her treasures on top

and now there was a cozy melange

the top drawer was filled with table linens and mismatched cloth napkins that had been

collected over the years,

ribbons, bits of twine, an old bottle of glue,
some yellow string that had once been wrapped around a gift
and three pairs of scissors with red handles

the second drawer held hats and mittens and woolen sweaters
 thick sweatshirts at the ready
for walks on the beach with
guests who had underestimated the wind
that swept off the sea as they walked the beach,
a faded green dog leash for when Sally came to visit
and some old toys that every one had forgotten were in there

the bottom drawer stuck and was hard to close

it held old photographs and scraps of fabric

things that no one looked at very often

bits and pieces of the home where they lived

24 November

to be honest i feel powerless in my choice

it is my habit to attend these gatherings

though i regard them

mostly as cycles of suffering

days on the calendar

I learned the lesson long ago

it is futile to fight the false sense of virtue

i hope only to be able to create a gap

in which i see the true thanksgiving

and i look forward to my undoing

24 November

i am thankful for our home on this rather tiny island

and for the beautiful view that greets me each morning

my man has a sharp intellect and a sharp wit

22 November

that morning the snow came down

falling so softly they hardly knew it was snow at all

footsteps led to the path in the wood

where the snow landed on yellow birch leaves

22 November

the weather has turned at last

mornings are chilly and evenings are darn right cold

i have reached the end of the semester and am buried under school projects

so this weekend i will be doing school work all day every day

i haven't had much of a chance to get out of doors to take pictures

this shot of the red twigs is one of the few pictures I've taken all week

i miss it

there is a tree in the school parking lot which i love

every morning i touch it gently as i walk by

and it touches me back

i am making pies and turnip for thanksgiving

but my mother is making the turkey

where they walked in the late afternoon

curling in as if to beckon one deeper into the forest

Seed pods in the autumn garden

since most of us will spend a goodly part of the coming months

indoors with our friends and family

it seems a good time for remembering that

we reap what we sow

now is the time for using onions from the local community gardens

18 November

leaves are falling all around

It is stormy this morning and dark still

here and there headlights from the
cars that leave early for work come down the curved hill

out of the little village

and onto the causeway that will take them past my house and off island

into the city

last night just at twilight the fog crept in and covered the empty field

now the wind is blowing heavy raindrops against the kitchen windows

while i sit here at the table in the lamplight

with my coffee

17 November

she sat at an isolated table in the corner of a darkened bar
her legs were long and lanky stretched out beneath her
her mouth was silky smooth
and her wit was razor sharp
he had gotten close enough to feel her pain
and know that her breath was as sweet as the whiskey
she was drinking from a murky shot glass
that left a puddle on the scarred wooden table

he had been a bit befuddled at first
when he saw her walking out of the marsh
but now he knew she was not a part of the human race

my boyfriend just told me that he has met a few women like this.....

17 November

 The moon on the one hand, the dawn on the other;
The moon is my sister, the dawn is my brother.
The moon on my left and the dawn on my right-
My brother, good morning; my sister, good night.

15 November

we spent Thursday afternoon with my daughters and Joe's sons

we walked the November wood under a moon mostly full

our weather is finally beginning to get cold

every night we turn on the electric "wood stove"

sunsets have been stunning lately

this weekend i will be doing nothing but school work

I have quite a bit due on monday

and quite a bit more due after that....

i plan on making blankets for my daughters for Christmas....

actually it will be a continuation of the blankets i planned on making for them last Christmas

14 November

lichen and bittersweet

13 November

I've heard that she who laughs, will last
i cannot say if this is true
my life's gone by so very fast
and as for laughs, I've had a few

my cares upon the winds, I cast
and sailed away upon the sea
straight and solid was my mast
and my longing to be free

been times life's hit me with a blast
or rocked me sweet and slow
i hear the whispers of my past
singing soft and low

my future yet is shining vast
fate mingles with my own free will
I've heard that she who laughs, will last
and as for laughs, I'm laughing still

13 November

they wandered past railings in the november wood

following the path to the long field

 and picnicked on gingersnaps

in the lowering sun

11 November

an ordinary morning

humming Julia in the sunny kitchen
with you
an instant of dignity in the morning drill

i wonder where the years have gone

you are the star i use to navigate my visions
yours is the stride i use to measure what we gain

late morning light streams  though the window
and I buckle under the grace

humming Julia in the sunny kitchen

with you

8 November

in the late afternoon sunlight

the gate stands open

welcoming a weary traveller

and all who enter through the garden gate

know that they are in a special place

quite apart from the day to day world

there's something about a gate in the garden

that makes one believe in fairies

and magical lands

a gate in the garden is so much more than just a space in the fence

I am quite glad to have it be friday

friday is such a pleasant sort of day

I am very glad as well to be sharing random 5 Friday here today

We have had some wonderful walking weather so far this autumn

the time change really messed with me this past week

I've been sleeping on my feet by 6:45 at night

and in the morning I've done all my chores

by 6:30!

8 November

ocean of love
break me with
the strength of a murmur

ocean of love
high upon these misty mountaintops
all rivers
all streams
flow downhill

ocean of love
crash me
splash me
break me with the strength of a murmer

hunkered down in the these trenches with you baby
the moon and stars glimmer on the bay
outside our bedroom window

 imaginary garden with real toads

7 November

to walk around the island was one of her favorite things

 the smell of the leaves

the crunch and shuffle of them underfoot

she loved to see them floating gently down

shining in the light against the blue autumn sky

all blown about and blustery

during a rainy windstorm in November

there are those who rake them up as soon as they fall

let life rush by their doorways

there is a sweetness when one lingers in the autumn

and for a little while

she lets the leaves stay as they lay

6 November

I know for sure that love is all there is

all there is that matters anyhow

i know for sure that forgiveness counts

i know for sure that

what i put out has a direct correlation

with what i take in

I wish I knew for sure

how to get through my day without

a mad crazy craving for ice cream

and I wish I knew for sure

how to speak French or Latin

or play the flute

or the fiddle

i wish i knew for sure

how to paint a beautiful water color

i don't know for sure

how it will all turn out in the end

but i know for sure that

i'd rather be surprised

I know for sure that

things have been pretty topsy turvy so far

and that at 50 years old

i have no better understanding

than i did when i was 25

6 November

Just wait till next year, Charlie Brown. You'll see!

Next year at this same time, I'll find a pumpkin patch that is sincere

and I'll sit in that pumpkin patch until the Great Pumpkin appears.

He'll rise out of that pumpkin patch

and he'll fly through the air with his bag of toys.

The Great Pumpkin will appear and I'll be waiting for him.

1 November

this is one of my favorite things about where I live

I come over the causeway and am blessed with this beautiful view

from my living room window I see just to the left of this Boston skyline

i walked across the street to the beach to take this shot

I have to go to the registry of motor vehicles

I think it will take at least an entire day

I'm bringing some reading materials

and lunch...

Joe and I are both doing a lot of studying

every night we are both working on school things

it's kind of nice

I just found a site that lists all kinds of candy that is gluten free

I did not need this information

I have started having hot flashes

not fun
